The temperatures are warming up and we are relishing beautiful springtime weather again! Baseball, softball and soccer teams are getting back on the fields, golf courses are bustling, and it’s easy to find reasons to spend time outside. While you and your family are enjoying this great time of year, are you remembering to protect your eyes? A good pair of sunglasses is essential for eye health and safety, in addition to the cosmetic value. There are several reasons to have each member of your family outfitted with a good pair of sunglasses:
1. Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. UVA is known to cause premature aging of the skin and eyes, while UVB is the culpret for sunburns, skin cancer and cataracts. All sunglasses we carry will protect your eyes from 100% of both UVA and UVB rays.
2. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from “blue light” from the solar spectrum, which could increase your risk of macular degeneration, especially for individuals that are “sun sensitive.”
3. Wearing good sunglasses will provide you with more comfortable vision. Bright sunlight and glare interfere with our ability to see clearly and cause you to squint (which increases wrinkles around your eyes!) and your eyes to water. These annoyances are minimized with sunglasses.
4. Wearing sunglasses in the day can actually help you to see more clearly at night. Exposure to bright light can make it more difficult to adjust to driving at night. Just 2-3 hours spent in bright sunlight without protection can hamper the ability to adapt quickly to nightime or indoor light levels.
5. Protect yourself from skin cancer. We all know that if we are in the sun, we should wear sunscreen to shield ourselves from harmful rays that can cause cancer. Your eyelids and the tender skin around the eyes need protection too!
While we think of sunglasses in connection to summer, the truth is they should be worn year round, and even if it’s cloudy. The UV rays are always there, anytime you’re outside. So whether your look is sophisticated, sporty, or just plain cool, anytime you step outside, take care of your eyes and put those shades on!
We can help you choose a style and lens that’s right for you, put your prescription in your sunglasses or provide shades to wear over your contacts and when no RX is necessary. If you’re shopping around, look for quality lenses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays and screen out 75-90% of visible light. And don’t forget the kids! They often spend more time in sunlight than adults.
